Vehicle access control decides which vehicles enter a site and creates a record of when they did. The equipment ranges from a simple automatic boom on a staff parking entrance through to hostile-vehicle mitigation with hydraulic bollards and road blockers. IDS supplies and installs automatic and manual boom gates, hydraulic and fixed bollards, and spike barriers, integrated with the same access control database used for pedestrian doors.
Boom gates are the default for parking entrances, office parks, estates, depots and industrial yards. They are chosen by lane width and duty cycle: a barrier serving a busy shopping-centre entrance opens thousands of times a day and needs a high-duty motor, while an estate side gate does a fraction of that. Common credentials are long-range RFID windscreen tags, so residents and staff never open a window, plus keypad, intercom or licence-plate recognition for visitors.
Bollards and spike barriers do a different job. Hydraulic rising bollards physically stop a vehicle and are used where a boom would simply be driven through — embassies, data centres, cash-handling facilities and controlled pedestrian zones. Fixed bollards protect building frontages and pedestrian areas permanently. Spike barriers enforce direction of travel on exit lanes, preventing a vehicle from reversing in behind one that has just left.
What drives the price is the barrier type, the lane width, the duty cycle, the credential technology and the civil work. Civil work is usually underestimated: a boom needs a foundation, conduit under the road surface for loop detectors, and power reticulation to the lane. Safety loops and photocells that stop the boom coming down on a vehicle are standard on our installations, not an upsell. Backup power is specified according to how many operations the lane must complete during an outage.
Every installation is commissioned with the same discipline as a door: credentials enrolled, safety devices tested, manual release demonstrated, and an administrator trained. Boom gates and bollards run off the same access database as your doors and turnstiles, so one person record governs the parking entrance and the office door, and one deletion removes both.
Typical price range
Automatic boom gate lanes from R25,000 installed; hydraulic bollards quoted per site
An automatic boom gate lane including barrier, safety loops, reader integration and installation generally starts around R25,000, with civil work and backup power quoted separately. Hydraulic bollards and road blockers are project-specific.
