Access Control Solutions We Supply and Install

Five core categories, all installed and commissioned by our own technicians and all able to run off one access control database.

Turnstiles

Waist-height, full-height and industrial rotor turnstiles from the Turnstar range, supplied and installed nationwide. They are built for high-volume, high-abuse pedestrian entrances such as factories, warehouses, mines and stadiums. Every unit can be driven by a fingerprint, facial or card reader on the same access control database.

Speedgates

Glass and acrylic-wing speed gates for corporate receptions and office lobbies, where throughput and appearance both matter. Wings retract on a valid credential and close behind each person, with tailgating and anti-passback detection built in. Lane widths include a wide DDA-compliant lane for wheelchair and trolley access.

Biometric Access Control

ZKTeco fingerprint, facial recognition and palm readers, installed standalone or networked across multiple doors. Biometric credentials cannot be lent, lost or cloned the way a card or a PIN can. We commission the software, enrol staff and train an administrator on your team before we leave site.

Time & Attendance

TimeMaster time and attendance software paired with biometric clocking terminals. Clockings are captured at the reader, so buddy punching and manual timesheet edits fall away. Hours, overtime and exception reports export into common South African payroll packages.

Visitor Management

Visitor registration at the gate or reception, with the visitor issued a temporary credential that expires automatically. Contractor and visitor movements are logged against the same access database as staff, which gives you one auditable record of who was on site. It is commonly deployed with turnstiles at office parks and with boom gates at residential estates.

How much does access control cost in South Africa?

Honest guidance rather than a single headline number. The ranges below are typical installed prices in South African Rand, including hardware, installation and commissioning. Every site is quoted individually — we are based in Cape Town and install nationwide, so travel and civil work also affect the final figure.

Biometric access control (per door)

R6,000 – R15,000

Standalone fingerprint or facial reader, electric lock, power supply and installation. Facial and palm readers sit at the upper end.

Networked access control (multi-door)

From R20,000

Controllers, management software, cabling and commissioning. Price scales with the number of controlled doors and readers.

Waist-height turnstile

R25,000 – R60,000

Tripod or waist-height unit including reader integration and installation. Stainless-steel finishes and outdoor sites cost more.

Full-height / industrial turnstile

R55,000 – R120,000

Single or double rotor units, usually with a concrete plinth, canopy and power reticulation as part of the install.

Glass speedgate lane

R80,000 – R200,000 per lane

Lobby speed gates with wing sensors and anti-tailgating. Wide DDA lanes and premium finishes push the figure up.

Time & attendance

From R12,000

Biometric clocking terminal plus TimeMaster software licence, setup and payroll export configuration.

Visitor management

From R15,000

Registration terminal or software, temporary credential issuing and integration with the existing access database.

What drives the price

  • Number of controlled entry points — each door, lane or gate carries its own hardware, cabling and labour.
  • Reader technology — fingerprint is the entry point; facial, palm and multi-modal terminals cost progressively more.
  • Integration — linking access control to time and attendance, payroll, CCTV or an existing controller adds configuration work.
  • Installation conditions — cable runs, network availability, civil work for plinths and power, and whether the site is live during install.

Most Access Control Providers Sell You Hardware. We Install a Working System.

If your business has dealt with unreliable suppliers, systems that were never properly commissioned, or hardware sitting in a box waiting for someone to install it — you know the frustration. IDS is different. We've done this for over 25 years, and every project ends with a working system, tested on-site, and supported by our team.

Hardware bought online

You bought hardware online and nobody knows how to install it properly.

Never commissioned

An installer disappeared mid-project and the system was never fully commissioned.

No after-sales support

When something goes wrong, the supplier doesn't answer the phone.

IDS is a single-source supply, installation, and support partner for commercial access control in South Africa. We are an authorised ZKTeco and Turnstar dealer — meaning you get manufacturer-backed products and an installer who knows every product we sell inside out.

Access Control FAQs

A turnstile uses physical arms or a rotor that a person pushes through, so it is a mechanical barrier built for volume and abuse. A speedgate uses glass or acrylic wings that retract when a valid credential is presented, which reads as a lobby product rather than an industrial one. Turnstiles are the right call for factories, mines, stadiums and construction sites; speedgates suit corporate receptions where appearance and throughput matter. Both can be driven by the same readers and the same access control software.

A single-door standalone fingerprint or facial reader with a lock, power supply and installation typically lands between R6,000 and R15,000 per door. Networked systems with management software, anti-passback and multiple readers usually start around R20,000 and scale with the number of doors. The reader technology drives a lot of the price: fingerprint is the cheapest, facial and palm recognition cost more, and multi-modal terminals cost the most. We quote per site because door hardware, cabling runs and existing infrastructure change the number more than the reader itself does.

Yes — the same biometric terminal can control a door and record clockings at the same time. We supply and install TimeMaster time and attendance software alongside ZKTeco terminals, which produces exception, overtime and hours-worked reports. Those reports export to the common South African payroll packages, so hours do not have to be recaptured by hand. We have integrated with a wide range of existing payroll and HR platforms and will confirm compatibility with yours before quoting.

Access control hardware is low-voltage and is designed to run through an outage when it is specified correctly. Standard practice on our installs is a battery-backed power supply per controller, which keeps readers, locks and controllers live for several hours. Turnstiles and boom gates are also fitted with a manual or fail-safe release so people can still exit safely if power and battery are both gone. Where a site needs longer autonomy we size a UPS or larger battery bank into the quote up front.

A single-door biometric system can be installed and commissioned in one day. A typical multi-storey office with a reception speedgate lane, several controlled doors and access software is generally a three to ten day installation, depending on cabling and network readiness. Turnstile and boom gate work adds civil work — plinths, conduit and power — which is usually the longest lead item. We give a project timeline with the quote and confirm it after a site walkthrough.

We are based in Cape Town and we install nationwide across South Africa. Projects outside our direct travel radius are handled with a site visit where the scope justifies it, and with remote installation and configuration support where it does not. Software, controller and reader configuration issues are almost always resolved remotely. Hardware faults are handled on site or by return, depending on the product and location.
